West Norfolk IPMS Annual Model Show brings out the enthusiasm even in the youngsters

Tuesday, July 9th, 2013

The 4th International Plastic Modellers Society (IPMS) Annual Model Show on Sunday, 23 June 2013 in the Downham Market Town Hall proved to be a great day out for model enthusiasts.  The venue was easy to find and there was lots of car parking.

The quality of the models displayed was as impressive as the last time I attended and the tombola was well stocked with great prizes with all funds going to a worthwhile Forces charity.  There was an open model competition which was duly judged by key members of the IPMS committee.

The best new initiative of this year’s event had to be the Airfix Make and Take programme.  This part of the Model Show was buzzing with interaction and us parents were delighted to see our youngsters join in and build a small scale model aircraft in no time at all.  It was great to see the number of kids joining in with such a creative activity rather than being stuck in front of a piece of 21st century gadgetry.  All in all this definitely gets my vote as the pièce de résistance of the whole day.  So a big thanks to the guys from the West Norfolk IPMS Model Show and Airfix for sponsoring the initiative.

The IPMS welcomes anyone to join their membership from 12 upwards.  Currently they number approximately 20 members who meet on a regular basis from all over West Norfolk twice a month.   Meetings take place at the William Burt Social Club. West Winch  on the 1st and 4th Wednesday of every month 1900 to 2145ish  of all abilities, beginners to “experts”!

The IPMS display at various shows throughout the UK and Norfolk.  See the website to see where the West Norfolk branch of IPMS visits.

There are approximately 20 members who meet on a regular basis from all over West Norfolk twice a month.  Members range in age from 12  to well… beyond retirement!  Meetings take place at the William Burt Social Club. West Winch  on the 1st and 4th Wednesday of every month 1900 to 2145ish  of all abilities, beginners to “experts”!  The West Norfolk IPMS have produced displays for the Bircham Newton history room and I can vouch for the quality of their work having attended a previous West Norfolk IPMS Model Show a few years back.

The IPMS display at various shows around the country from Telford to Hendon. As well as the local area.  See the website to see where the West Norfolk branch of IPMS visits.  The dedicated attend all the shows although it is not compulsory and space is always available for newcomers to display their work.

Members of the West Norfolk IPMS  build all varieties of armour, aircraft, ships, figures, space, horror, sci-fy, cars, trucks, trains and more.  Anyone wishing to improve modelling techniques, learn something new, build something different or just get inspiration to have a go are welcome. There are even lady members (5 at time of writing).  They are a friendly bunch who enjoy a laugh and plenty of banter.

Another aspect to the Society’s activities include visits to museums such as Duxford and regular special talks.  An example of the type of talks arranged is a recent one by Ken Wallis (little Nellie pilot and engineer)  who gave an account of his life, and adventures.

So if you are seriously keen on modelling why not pay a visit to one of the Society’s meets and get creative with models!
